This semester, I had the exciting opportunity to be an OU Cousin! My group consisted of 6 girls including myself. This isn’t usually the way it goes (normally it’s just a pair or group of three), but since there was such a shortage of female international students versus OU female students we were forced to form big groups. That’s okay though because I love the girls in my group! Their names are Lauryn, Mecca, Sydney, Victoria, and Yasmin. Mecca and I already knew each other because we’re both in the Pre-Med Women’s Society, so it was cool to already be familiar with one of the girls. Yasmin and Mecca were roommates as well. I am thankful that despite the challenges trying to find an international cousin I was still able to find a great group of girls!
All of us were really busy this semester, so we couldn’t really find much time to hang out. The Thunder game tickets also sold out super quick, so we weren’t able to do that either. Luckily, we could all make it to the Chickasha Festival of Lights on the 7th of December and we had a great time! It was awesome to be able to spend time with the girls and catch up on what’s been happening in our lives. Despite it being legitimately freezing outside (even with all the layers I put on), it was still fun to walk around and chat. The lights were beautiful and the cinnamon rolls really hit the spot. Definitely recommend going to this event with your OU cousin if you can!
All in all, even though my first experience wasn’t what I thought it would be, I still love the program and will probably try it again at some point before I graduate. It’s an amazing opportunity to make new friends from different countries and learn about their culture while helping them feel welcome at OU. I definitely plan on keeping in touch with my cousins!
